Brief guidance for children with asthma:
Medication Management
Always follow the doctor’s prescribed treatment plan.
Keep rescue inhalers (like albuterol) easily accessible at home, school, and during activities.
Ensure daily controller medications (if prescribed) are taken consistently.
Trigger Avoidance
Identify and reduce exposure to common triggers such as dust, pollen, smoke, strong odors, pet dander, mold, and cold air.
Encourage handwashing and flu vaccinations to reduce respiratory infections.
Activity & Exercise
Children with asthma can and should be active, but may need to use an inhaler before exercise if recommended by their doctor.
Choose activities that allow for rest breaks if needed.
Home & School Support
Share the child’s asthma action plan with teachers, caregivers, and school nurses.
Make sure adults around the child know how to recognize and respond to an asthma attack.
Emergency Signs
Seek medical help if the child has difficulty speaking, rapid breathing, bluish lips/fingernails, or if rescue medication is not relieving symptoms.
